Our Cultural Heart
We are working to develop a cultural heart for the Gold Coast. For the month of June, the model for the spectacular winning design will be on display at the Upper Coomera Centre. We know that if we deliver a cultural precinct it will support and nurture the arts and drive our city in the growing area of cultural tourism. I welcome your feedback on the project and its design.
The Mayor has recently surveyed residents to gain input into the 2014-15 Budget. Many within our community expressed frustration about the road network in our area – and this too concerns me greatly. Heathwood Drive at Upper Coomera which accesses Exit 57, Days and Foxwell Roads at the entry to Exit 54, Eggersdorf and Peachey Roads at Ormeau and Stanmore at 45 and Stapylton Jacobs Well Road at 38 are all huge problems which need urgent attention.
As a result I have again written to the State and Federal Transport Ministers lobbying their commitment of the necessary funds to upgrade the M1 and relieve these pressure points. In recent years Council has committed millions of dollars to upgrading its access roads – only to have traffic at gridlock at the approaches to the M1. Your rates cannot possibly extend to cover such expensive upgrades and it is imperative that the State and Federal Governments recognise the need for upgrades. This is especially true since the State Government has required Council to remove the identification of the intra regional transport corridor from the new Town Plan, indicating no plans for an alternative north south route to the M1. Former governments had been acquiring land to provide an additional north south linkage, which now appears unlikely to proceed.
Draft City Plan Special Industry
The City Plan will invite public submissions from 18 June for 31 business days. Prior to public consultation, the State Government required 10 changes to the City’s Draft Plan. (The Deputy Premier’s letter outlining the required amendments will be available for viewing on-line to provide a transparent record of Council’s Draft and the amendments required by the State.) One initiative of the Council was to seek to have eliminated from our future Scheme any industry that creates noxious or hazardous emissions or odours. That designation is called “Special Industry” and Council’s draft made it clear that we did not want it in our city, with the exception of alcohol brewing and sugar cane production, both of which come under the Special Industry designation. Be sure to look at the Draft when it is placed on public display and make a submission if you agree that we don’t welcome other Special Industry uses within Gold Coast City. It can be as simple as: “Please remove the Special Industry use within Gold Coast City because, clearly, the appropriate buffers to residential communities cannot be achieved”.
Draft City Plan Mirambeena Drive Haulage Route
Residents of Ormeau may also be interested in making a submission regarding the haulage route which formerly went along Mirambeena Drive, but which (following lobbying by myself and the Member for Coomera last year), resulted in a Council Resolution to amend the route via Depot Road and Attenborough Boulevard to the M1. Despite indicating this within the Draft, the State has required that both routes appear in our new Planning Scheme – so be sure to lodge your preference during the submission period.
Upper Coomera Centre
The Upper Coomera Centre 1st birthday celebrations are on Saturday 14 June 2014 from 9am. There’ll be so much to see and do so bring along the family for a day of free activities. We’ll have a sausage sizzle, jumping castle, face painting for the little ones, live bands and more.
Harness Racing Alberton
A recent public meeting was held to inform the community about a proposed Harness Racing Track at Alberton near the intersection of Alberton and Zipfs Roads. I read of the meeting in the paper and to date have not met or discussed the proposal with the proponent. I have, however, recently received a call from a consultant who has indicated the proposal will be advanced and I will keep you informed as information comes to hand.
Coomera Springs Boulevard Parkland
There have been ongoing issues with the power supply to the fountain at Coomera Springs Boulevard due to the transition from the developer to Council. We hope to have this sorted by mid June.
Safety Cameras Camera Abraham Park
Due to the ongoing vandalism and unacceptable behaviour within Abraham Park Upper Coomera, Safety Cameras have been activated to monitor and record all activities.
Water And Rates Billing
From 1 July 2014, Council will issue quarterly bills for water and sewerage services. This will bring Gold Coast Water into line with other Australian utilities. You will receive your water bills in the following months: July, October, January and April. This will allow closer monitoring of usage and we hope smaller but more regular billing will be manageable for residents. For the time being, rates will continue to issue half yearly.
I remind residents to recycle correctly and to avoid contamination of their bins which can cause truckloads of recyclable materials to end up in landfill.
Waste management officers advise that Division 1 residents are among the city’s worst offenders when it comes to contaminated recycling bins. Upper Coomera and Ormeau have been highlighted as problem areas and I urge all residents to recycle correctly to avoid contaminating entire loads which then must be redirected to our landfill sites. The most common contaminants include garden waste and building materials. Your assistance in avoiding placing these items in the recycle collection is appreciated.
It’s great to see strong interest in a new Neighbourhood Watch for Upper Coomera. If you are interested in joining, contact Stephanie via email at email@example.com. Plans are also afoot for a Highland Reserve NHW. If you are interested in receiving information, contact Ann via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
