The northern Gold Coast’s youngest sports stars were out in force on Sunday at a free family fun day at Ormeau Ridge hosted by Stockland.

Around 300 people attended the “Big Sports Day Out”, which also included the announcement of new $5 million AFL fields for Ormeau.

The new Ormeau Sports Park will feature two full-size AFL fields and become the new home for the Ormeau Bulldogs club in time for the 2013 season. It will also ultimately include netball courts and a skate park.

Sunday’s event gave local children the chance to try a wide range of sports including AFL, cricket, netball and basketball, as well as Zumba dancing.

Among the crowd, were dozens of Ormeau Bulldogs members, and Gold Coast Suns midfielder and rising star Hayden Jolly.

Local councillor Donna Gates was also on hand to announce more details of the future Ormeau Sports Park on the corner of Upper Ormeau and Tillyroen Roads.

Stockland Regional Manager for the Gold Coast, David Laner, said Stockland hoped to start work on the two new AFL fields by September.

“We have signed an infrastructure agreement with council which means our development contributions will be used to directly fund this vital new sports park for the region,’’ Mr Laner said.

“The Ormeau Sports Park borders our Ormeau Ridge community and will provide a great location for sporting activity on the northern Gold Coast for many years to come,’’ he said.

Ormeau Ridge is located between the Gold Coast and Brisbane with easy access north and south on the Pacific Motorway and close to more than a dozen local schools, shopping, and other services.

The community has its own $1 million hilltop adventure park features multi-purpose courts, cricket nets, basketball hoop, huge kick around area, an amazing adventure playground, and plenty of shaded picnic and BBQ areas.

Construction is also well under way on a commercial hub for Ormeau Ridge, which will include a coffee shop, future child care centre and other retailers.

Home and land packages at Ormeau Ridge are currently available from $319,900.

For more information, visit the Ormeau Ridge Sales and Information Centre off Upper Ormeau Road, call (07) 5546 6425 or go to www.stockland.com.au/ormeauridge.

For those who are at home in the kitchen this might be a good recipe to whip up for tomorrow.

Ingredients

1 cup plain flour

1 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup coconut

1 cup brown sugar

125g butter

1 tablespoon water

1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate soda

2 tablespoons golden syrup

Method

Sift the flour into a mixing bowl. Add sugar, rolled oats and coconut.

In a separate dish melt butter (use a saucepan or microwave) and then add golden syrup and water to this dish and mix well. Stir bicarbonate soda into this liquid mixture.

Add the liquid mix to the dry mixing bowl ingredients and mix thoroughly. For a crunchier biscuit simply add more golden syrup.

Place balls of the mixture onto a greased tray and bake at 175 Degrees Celsius oven ( 165 for fan forced) for 15-20 mins. The bigger the ball of mixture the larger your cookies will be.

Cookies are ready when golden brown.

By Emily Ponton

The Village Café at the Beenleigh Town Historical Village & Museum is inviting you and your friends to attend a fun-filled interactive and all-inclusive evening on the 21st of April.

Murder At The Four Deuces is a rip roaring, 1920′s gangster murder mystery party game, with lots of murder, bribery and back stabbing to be had.

The theme is loosely based on the very first Chicago and New York gangsters, their rivalries, love lives and speakeasies.

Each member of the game will receive a character to play and their job is to work with others to find out who committed the murder.

There will be clues and riddles along the way and lots of booze, food and entertainment too.

Come dressed in your finest 1920s style outfits and be ready for a party game you will never forget.

The evening is an exclusive fundraising event for Emily, the Cane Ambassador Entrant for the Beenleigh Town Historical Village & Museum and the Village Café.

The night includes a three course buffet, champagne, beer and wine and of course … the murder.

There will be an auction for a wonderfully illustrated water-coloured painting by Don Waters valued at over $4000.

Price for the evening is $120.00 per person, register quickly as there is limited bookings available.

Please call Michelle from the Village Café at the Beenleigh Historical Village & Museum as soon as possible on ph. 3287 2939 or email specialeventscatering@gmail.com if you are interested in attending.

We know everyone is always keen for an update on the Woolworths and Ormeau Town Centre locations and we have recently gotten the latest update from Councillor Donna Gates (Div 1).

WOOLWORTHS PEACHEY ROAD

It has been a couple of months since the developer of the proposed Woolworths supermarket next to the Caltex on Peachey Road confirmed with me that commencement was imminent. At present I have an email request with him and will keep you updated if any further information confirming a start date is provided. The application for shops and office at 19-21 Peachey Road was first approved by Council in 2004. In 2007, a change to the layout was agreed to provide a better outcome for the site, and again in 2010 a further change was approved. My understanding is that the Council Approval is valid until late 2012, after which the approval will lapse if construction has not commenced and no application for extension is received.

COLES NORTH ORMEAU TOWN CENTRE EGGERSDORF ROAD

This site has Council Approval but is the subject of competitor appeals which will be decided through the courts. It is important to note that the Conditions of Approval from Council require a signalised intersection to provide safe passage across Eggersdorf Road to Arthur Way. There is also a requirement for the upgrade of the roundabout at the M1, which falls within Department of Transport and Main Roads jurisdiction. I will be fighting for signals at the roundabouts on both sides of the M1 to ensure the safety of our children. The western roundabout also requires upgrading along with Tillyroen Road as part of the Stockland Approval for homes on Upper Ormeau Road.

Further, along Eggersdorf Road from Jacobs Ridge Road heading east past Mother Teresa School, Council is pursuing land resumptions to enable widening. Two east bound lanes and one west bound is proposed for construction in the current four year capital works program.

UPCOMING ELECTION MESSAGE

To My Ormeau & local residents,

Thank you again for your efforts in helping with the LJ Hooker Easter Egg Hunt which just gets better each year. It’s so good to come out to these events and see so many families coming together for community events. I know it is just one of many held in Ormeau and it certainly shows the strong community spirit you all have.

As the Council election nears, I just wanted to reassure you of my ongoing commitment to the residents of Division 1. I know the area and its people well, and I understand the difficulties facing many families and I how important it will be to focus on keeping rates as low as possible.

The new Ormeau Centre will begin construction at the start of May 2012 and once completed, we can build on the events planned for Ormeau from June onwards in our own space with the facilities we need.

It is my plan to expand the CCTV network in known trouble spots to counter the senseless destruction of public assets. A new and improved skate park for Norfolk with also be a focus for youth, right opposite our Community/Youth Centre which will also have a band practice room, computer rooms, dance practice and men’s shed where the mentoring of youth will be possible for those interested in carpentry. I’m confident that new and exciting opportunities for our young people will result in our new Centre and provide a convenient venue for activities for northern families.

I look forward to working with you all in the coming term and thank you for your ongoing support. If there is anything you want to discuss I encourage you to do so by calling 0404 444 439 or via email donna@donnagates.net.au.

Kind regards,
Donna Gates

We certainly appreciate the support that Donna has given us over the past 3 years since starting the My Ormeau website and appreciate the incredible amount of effort that goes into Division 1 as the fastest growing region on the Gold Coast. Many of our community events are made possible due to the allowances made possible by Donna and her personal assistance in gaining approvals for ground use, sponsorship funds and much more.

We are focused on our goal in making Ormeau the most community focused suburb on the Gold Coast and really appreciate working with others with a common goal!

New Markets in Town!

Old Beenleigh Town Historical Village is excited to announce its ‘Make it, bake it, sew it, grow it’ markets, which are held every Saturday from 7am-12pm.

The markets have been up and running since the start of March and locals are excited to be selling their handmade, homemade and home grown products.

The stalls include; plants, fresh produce, gifts, handmade clothing, greeting cards, kids wall clocks, handmade soap, hair accessories, jewellery and much more.

There is live entertainment from local buskers and a face painter for the kids.

The village is calling for anybody who might be interested in setting up a stall.

The Village Café owner and operator, Michelle Parry, said there needs to be more stalls to help make the markets a success.

“We have approximately 10 stalls at the moment, however, we need more stall holders and a larger variety of products to bring more people through the gates.

“If you make it, bake it, sew it or grow it then we want you to come along and sell your product,” she said.

There is no fee on sites at the moment, so if you have a marquee and some tables then come along, sell your product and be part of the newest markets in town.

For more information please call the village on PH. 3287 2939 or email specialeventscatering@gmail.com.
